4 Essential Supplements to Speed Up Your Rhinoplasty Recovery
Rhinoplasty is a major surgical operation that requires a considerable recovery period. Almost all rhinoplasty patients undergo a lot of pain, facial bruising and swelling right after the rhinoplasty operation. Fortunately, the pain and discomfort is quite manageable and can be expected to subside after a day or two. On the other hand, the bruising and swelling around the nose area and other parts of the face can last for weeks and even months in some extreme cases. Although it’s essential that you give your body time to heal after the operation, it’s also ideal to take some steps to help your body recover faster. Here are some essential supplements that can be effective in speeding up your rhinoplasty recovery.
- Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one of the most common supplements that you are likely to find around your house and it also happens to be one of the best supplements that you can take to speed up your post-rhinoplasty recovery. Surgical procedures like rhinoplasty actually exhaust the amount of vitamin C in your body, this is why it’s important to maintain the necessary levels before and after the procedure. Around two weeks before your operation, begin taking at least 500 mg of vitamin C daily. After the operation, increase your dosage to 1000 mg a day for another two weeks. Vitamin C not only speeds up healing after surgery, but it also helps your body produce collagen which is essential in repairing wounds.
-
Bromelain
Most rhinoplasty surgeons also prescribe Bromelaine supplements to their patients. This enzyme is particularly good if you are one of the unlucky ones who tend to bruise a lot (like me). After my revision rhinoplasty, I actually had a black eye that persisted for weeks, even after my swelling has gone down. Start taking 1000 mg of Bromelaine at least one week before your surgery. Continue to take the same dosage at least two weeks after the operation. To help your body absorb the substance better, take the supplements on an empty stomach. Bromelaine is derived from pineapple, so it’s also a great idea to include a glass of pineapple juice in your daily diet.
-
Arnica Montana
One of the supplements that also helped with my revision rhinoplasty recovery was Arnica. Arnica is actually a flower that is commonly used in homeopathic preparations. It is typically applied to the skin to relieve bruises, swelling, aches, sprains and the like. In rhinoplasty, however, arnica comes in the form of pellets. It is recommended that you take an Arnica pill around four to five times daily for two weeks after your rhinoplasty operation. Arnica can greatly help in reducing the soreness, bruising and swelling that you are sure to experience after rhinoplasty.
-
Omega-3 Fish Oil
Unlike the first three supplements, Omega-3 Fish Oil must only be taken after the operation. Even though there have been some studies that suggest that they boost your immune system before the operation, many rhinoplasty surgeons believe that they can also make you more susceptible to bleeding. To be on the safe side, take Omega-3 Fish Oil post-surgery. Take 2000 mg per day for two weeks after the operation and decrease your intake by half afterward.
